Consolidated diverse group of investment professionals in London, Geneva, Hong Kong and San Francisco into global team with private client assets under management of $2.5 billion in discretionary and advisory accounts. Outsourced the international investment management function.

  • Established framework and policy for international investment advisory business.

  • Implemented investment policy and process for managing discretionary global portfolios; developed and produced client marketing and investment publications.
  • Conducted due diligence for potential acquisition of private banking/investment management firm.
  • Developed criteria and conducted search for outside international investment manager; structured and implemented transition plan and staff reduction.

Latin America Corporate Finance, Vice President & Manager
San Francisco:
1989-1993
Head of corporate finance business for Latin America, focused on management of Latin American loan and investment portfolio. Staff in US and 5 Latin American markets. Transactions included debt-for-equity swaps, financial arrangement, valuation and other advisory work, and (from 1992) export finance loans.

  • Swapped over $750 million in non-performing Latin American loan assets into investments with equity upside and/or enhanced value.
  • Created capability to distribute Latin American loans and euro-securities to institutional and private investors. Organized, staffed and implemented sales and syndication desk in New York, with first year sales of over $800 million.
  • Instrumental in start-up of LDC debt trading desk in New York as vehicle to liquidate portfolio and generate revenue. Structured legal, business and back-office organization.

Latin America Corporate Finance, Vice President & Manager
San Francisco:
1988-1989

  • Managed San Francisco-based team of 5 corporate finance analysts engaged in debt-for-equity swaps and asset management. Functions included risk analysis, deal structure, regulatory approval and execution.
  • Conceived and led development of a comprehensive equity valuation and swap analysis model, incorporating tax, loss reserves and accounting impacts. Improved deal screening and analysis, reduced time spent on unattractive deals , and improved quality of approval presentations.

Global Public Debt Management, Vice President
New York:
1983-1988
Represented Bank of America on international bank advisory committees for restructuring sovereign debt. Primary countries included Mexico, Venezuela (BofA as co-chair), Panama (BofA as chair) and Argentina. Key role in deal structure, negotiation, documentation and implementation of complex and innovative agreements. Received Bank of America’s CEO award.

  • Chaired bank group in successful voluntary re-negotiation of $3.0 billion banker’s acceptance facility for Petroleos de Mexico in 1987.
  • Chaired bank group for Republic of Panama restructuring and new financing agreements in 1985, totaling $869 million.
  • Co-chaired sub-committee which negotiated restructuring plan for $9 billion in private sector obligations under FICORCA, a Mexican trust for private sector foreign exchange coverage, in 1987.
  • Advised in private sector loan work-outs in Venezuela, totaling approximately $450 million.

Arranged syndicated loans for Latin American public and private sector borrowers, with a key role in over $8.5 billion in new financing in Argentina, Colombia, Panama and Venezuela. Performed all functions including business development, loan structure, syndication, documentation and closing.
